The course has five modules.
MODULE 1. Data analytics for sustaining peace in the UN System
This module will provide an overview of current tools and technologies available for peacebuilding and integrated data analytics within the United Nations and among other partners. The module will also introduce some of the challenges and opportunities with those technologies.
MODULE 2. Introduction to storytelling, spreadsheets and visualization
This module introduces participants to data exploration using spreadsheets, with a focus on practical techniques for understanding and visualizing data. Participants will learn the basics of working with Excel, including creating PivotTables and PivotCharts, through examples drawn from real-world peacebuilding practices. The session aims to equip participants with foundational skills for exploring and analyzing data effectively.
MODULE 3. Exploring Data using Dashboarding Tools
The goal of this module is to build on the previous one and introduce participants to the principles of data visualization and the steps for creating dashboards using PowerBi. Participants will also be guided on the principles of good visualizations, types of visualizations and their suitability for presenting different types of data using the UN standards on visualizing data. The module will also provide an overview on how to use data visualization to build compelling stories for sustaining peace.
MODULE 4. Trends Analysis, Strategic Foresight and Presentations
The goal of this module is to dive into the multiple visuals developed in the dashboarding platform to identify patterns and trends in the data. Participants will be taken through ways to link and query different data sets to understand patterns such as correlation and/or causality. This module will also have a presentation session where participants will present to each other interesting stories in their data sets and showcase their peacebuilding analysis.
MODULE 5. Technology and ethical challenges with data management
This module will build on some of the issues identified during the first module and cover other pre-identified challenges/issues with regards to data management (data privacy, ethics, protection of data subjects etc.).
