The Integrated Data Analytics for Prevention Intermediate Boot Camp course offers an opportunity to enhance data analytics skills for professionals in peace and security, focusing on advanced techniques in data collection, database design, and dashboard creation. This course is designed to empower peace and security practitioners with the tools they need to effectively leverage data for prevention efforts in alignment with the UN New Agenda for Peace, UN 2.0 agenda, and the Quintet of Change. This course also explores basic skills for integration of artificial intelligence and Chat GPT into analytics workflows.

Introduction

In today's rapidly evolving landscape, the importance of data-driven decision-making cannot be overstated. The UN New Agenda for Peace underscores prevention as a central tenet, emphasizing the need for proactive measures to address conflicts and promote sustainable peace. Similarly, the UN 2.0 agenda and the Quintet of Change emphasize innovation and adaptation in response to emerging challenges. In line with these priorities, our Integrated Data Analytics for Prevention Intermediate Boot Camp equips participants with the skills and knowledge needed to harness the power of data for effective prevention strategies.

This boot camp builds on a foundational and introductory course on data analytics for peace that has been running for the past three years. In this course, participants will be taken through various practical activities and theoretical approaches to be able to better understand and visualize data for better integrated decision making and storytelling on peace building. This training delves deeper into data collection tools in various contexts to enable participants deploy digital tools that can gather data both offline (e.g. communities) and online (e.g. social media). The course will also explore how this data can be channeled to databases built by the participants and visualized in dynamic dashboards on PowerBi. With the new technological advancements affecting peace building and conflict globally, this intermediate course will introduce ways in which AI can be used in various ways in the data collection, analysis and visualization process. Participants will also be exposed to real-world conflict problems to model ideas and propose solutions to address these problems while still grappling with the realities of ethical dilemmas related to handling sensitive datasets and information.

Objectives

Through this intermediate course, participants will:

  • Gain expertise in data collection methodologies, including the design of robust databases and the implementation of quick data collection applications.
  • Learn advanced techniques for dashboard creation, enabling them to visualize and analyse complex datasets with ease.
  • Explore the integration of Artificial Intelligence and Chat GPT into data analytics workflows, unlocking new insights and possibilities.
  • Understand the significance of prevention in the context of the UN New Agenda for Peace, UN 2.0 agenda, and the Quintet of Change, and learn how data analytics can support proactive intervention strategies.
Course methodology

The course is facilitated in line with adult-learning best practices and will include plenary discussions, scenario building exercises, and interactive exchanges in a safe and inclusive environment and is aimed at staff working in the peace and security pillar and peacebuilding to be able to understand the interplay between the deeper concepts of data visualization, integrated storytelling and decision making from humanitarian action and peacekeeping to peacebuilding in line with the Secretary-General's Data Strategy, the New Agenda for Peace and UN 2.0.
