This on-demand online training aims to strengthen the technical and managerial capabilities of UN entities staff responsible for conducting or overseeing evaluations. The training is in line with the norms and standards of the United Nations Evaluation Group (UNEG), and can be fully tailored to the evaluation context and function of the requesting UN entity.

Introduction

Evaluation plays a critical role in optimizing performance, ensuring accountability for results, and contributing to organizational learning. UNSSC is pleased to collaborate with UN entities to deliver a fully tailored-made course on evaluation management aimed at strengthening staff’s skills in all different components of the evaluation process (from planning to budgeting, final report, management response and follow up)

Objectives

Acknowledging the organizational context and the specific requirements of the requesting UN entity, the course aims to strengthen the technical and managerial capacities of UN staff to plan and perform quality evaluations.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • describe key concepts and principles of evaluation;
  • articulate how to plan and manage evaluations;
  • be able to scope and design an evaluation, including terms of references and an evaluation design matrix;
  • be introduced to the most common evaluation methods used within the organization;
  • plan the steps for the evaluation follow-up.
Course methodology

The course includes a range of synchronous and asynchronous activities. Practical exercises based on hypothetical and actual UN examples co-designed with the requesting UN entity will be a key feature of this course. This approach ensures that participants not only gain solid knowledge and skills but also apply them.

The standard offer consists of four modules. These include:

  • six online lessons for individual self-study by participants, including a discussion forum to test your understanding
  • a live webinar with an instructor including discussion and a case study in break-out groups during the webinar (online).

The weekly instructor-led webinars are conducted on Zoom. Participants need a computer (or mobile device), a reliable internet connection and either a headset with a microphone to connect to the audio through a computer, or a telephone. We recommend accessing audio through your computer. No special software is required, but participants must be able to access Zoom. We will send access instructions to registered participants, and we recommend that you download the application and test your setup in advance.

The self-paced components and discussion forum for each week of the course are designed and structured on UNKampus, one of UNSSC's online learning platforms.
