Dr Maria Elena G. Filio-Borromeo
<p><strong>Dr Maria Elena G. Filio-Borromeo </strong>is the <em>UNAIDS Country Director</em> for Pakistan and Afghanistan and is mainly responsible for ensuring the provision of expert support to the national HIV response in these countries, through effective policy and strategic guidance, technical collaboration, and political outreach to key partners - in order to achieve the agreed UN General Assembly goals and targets and advance towards UNAIDS shared vision of zero new HIV infections, zero discrimination and zero-AIDS related deaths. </p>
<p>Her vast experience includes her roles as the <em>Regional Programme Adviser</em> at the UNAIDS Regional Support Team, Asia Pacific (RST-AP) in Bangkok, Thailand and as the Regional <em>Investment and Efficiency Adviser for UNAIDS</em>.</p>
<p>Dr Borromeo has over 26 years of experience on STI, HIV and AIDS response, having been the <em>Program Manager</em> of the National AIDS and STI Prevention and Control Program of the Philippine Department of Health, and THE Head of the Philippine National AIDS Council (PNAC) Secretariat in 1996.</p>
<p>Dr Borromeo is a Doctor of Medicine and holds a Master’s Degree in Public Health from the University of the Philippines.</p>
