Introduction

While women are strongly affected by humanitarian emergencies, they are under-represented in the sector - especially in leadership positions. It is vital that we redress this gender inequality and fully harness the potential of women leadership in humanitarian decision-making.

This programme is designed to support women excel in humanitarian leadership by offering a forum for reflection, discussion and learning. In addition to academic, practitioners’ and senior leaders’ inputs, a 360 degree and personality assessment, each participant will take away a personal action plan, accompanied by individual coaching sessions for 6 months following the programme. Objectives

Objectives: 

Through active participation in this programme, participants will:

  • Gain a better understanding of the different approaches to leadership, the gender aspects of leadership, and the challenges and opportunities faced by women in leadership roles, all with special regard to humanitarian leadership.
  • Explore and discuss the dynamics of power and influence.
  • Receive a 360-degree leadership assessment and individual coaching to help increase self-awareness, and capacity to realise their full leadership potential.
  • Develop leadership skills and competencies to act as change agents, and contribute to a more agile, adaptable and effective humanitarian system.
  • Acquire skills for communication for transformative leadership, negotiation, partnership building and maintaining resilience.
  • Benefit from a strengthened network of women leaders.
  • Create a personal blueprint for action and learning trajectory.
  • Learn skills to combat gender inequality in the workspace and contribute to an egalitarian professional environment.

Course Methodology

Course Methodology: 

The ‘Women in Humanitarian Leadership’ programme aims to expand leadership potential of participants through:

  • A pre-residential component, including a 360° leadership assessment, personality assessment and pre-readings;
  • A four-day face-to-face training;
  • Four Individualized executive coaching sessions;
  • Follow up activities, such as a personal action plan and continued alumnae networking opportunities.

The programme methodology is dynamic, combining interactive lectures by experts with discussion and consultation; practical exercises; peer-exchange and networking; and individual and group reflection. State-of-the art technology will be utilised throughout the programme.

The target audience for this programme is professional female staff at the P4/P5 level and equivalent posts from the humanitarian community.
